Our Mission

At Four Roots, our vision of innovation and sustainability came together in one of our largest projects - the Four Roots Alternative Farm. Located in the heart of downtown Spokane, we are out to prove that sustainable farming can happen ANYWHERE.

Our mission extends beyond just growing produce; it's about pioneering a greener, more sustainable future for Eastern Washington.

Our sustainable farming practices reduce carbon footprint, water usage, and space. The Four Roots Alternative Farm not only produces high-quality, local produce year-round but also serves as an educational hub. We're committed to providing opportunities for our community to learn about and embrace this innovative farming method.

Alternative Farming Project Goals

Empower Spokane through the Alternative Farming Project, pioneering hydroponic methods to cultivate sustainable, water-efficient crops. Educate and inspire a community committed to urban farming, fostering growth, innovation, and environmental stewardship.

What is the Alternative Farming Project?

In Spokane, our Alternative Farming Project makes farming achievable in any urban space! We're all about hydroponics—no farmland needed! To sum it up, we grow nutrient-dense crops in nutrient-rich water, saving water, cutting down on waste, and reducing the stress and pollution placed on land. It's a high-yielding garden in a small controlled space. This clever farming method not only provides fresh local produce but also proves that farming can happen right in the city. We're redefining farming, demonstrating its adaptability and sustainability in different places. We intend to provide public education so our community can enjoy alternative farming methods at home. Additionally, the produce grown in our facility is used in our NiceBox program.

How do Hydroponics Gardens Work?

Hydroponics revolutionizes traditional farming by cultivating plants without soil. In this method, plants receive a nutrient-rich water solution directly, providing the perfect conditions for growth. The key to its efficiency is a controlled environment where factors like temperature, light, and pH levels are meticulously regulated. Instead of relying on soil, hydroponics uses alternatives like perlite, rock wool or coconut coir, making roots directly absorb the vital nutrients they need to thrive. This precise delivery of essential nutrients accelerates growth, resulting in healthier and higher yields. Hydroponics cuts down on wasted resources, requiring less water than conventional farming and eliminating the need for extensive farmland, making it a sustainable and innovative agricultural solution for urban areas and families.

Hydroponic Farming Benefits:

  • Water Efficiency: Requires significantly less water compared to traditional soil-based farming.

  • Space Optimization: Thrives in limited spaces, making it ideal for urban environments.

  • Faster Growth: Direct nutrient absorption accelerates plant growth, resulting in quicker harvests.

  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Minimizes soil erosion, pesticide use, and agricultural runoff, promoting eco-friendliness.

  • Year-Round Cultivation: Provides the flexibility to grow crops consistently throughout the year.

  • Higher Yields: Optimized conditions lead to increased productivity and crop yields.

  • Resource Conservation: Eliminates the need for extensive farmland, conserving natural resources.

Educating for a Better Tomorrow

At Four Roots, we're making hydroponics knowledge accessible to everyone in our community. Our hope is to provide fun programs and workshops, where we will break down the mysteries of alternative farming methods. Our goal is to inspire both farmers and families to explore this cool innovative option for producing fruits and veggies. With hands-on experiences and useful insights, we'll empower individuals to embrace hydroponics, creating a new era of sustainable agriculture. Through education, Four Roots is planting the seeds of change, cultivating a community excited and confident about the future of sustainable, at-home farming.
