What We Learn Everyday
Stay tuned in for updates and tips as we learn and master alternative farming together.
“Today we noticed that our lettuce leaves on the center rack were wilting.”
Sometimes lettuce grown indoors can be a little bit limp. That's because it's warm and sometimes even dry indoors. Give your lettuce a 2-5 minute bath and ice water to reinvigorate it and have it tasting crunchy right away. Keep it crunchy in the fridge by sealing it in a Ziploc bag.
“How the heck do we have root rot?”
It’s only happening at our at-home gardens… but why? So annoying to have this happen after watching your plants grow.
Remove any afflicted plants from the garden.
Remove the plant from its container and gently rinse slime and plant matter off the roots in clean water.
Trim dead or dying root tips.
Soak the roots in a plant-safe sterilizing solution.
Drain and sterilize your hydroponic system. Look for and correct any problems with the system that could have caused the root rot, such as poor air pumps or pests.
Replace the now-sterilized plants in the garden. Trim back some leaves to allow the plant to direct its energy to its roots.
Consider adding good bacteria to your nutrient solution if you couldn’t determine the direct cause of the outbreak.
“My Plants are overgrowing the garden…”
Prune it. The simplest way to reduce the size of a plant is to prune it, which means cutting back its growth until it's a size you're happy with. You'll need some secateurs to make neat cuts.
